SANDY, Utah — In a shocking turn of events, a Utah man drove a recently purchased Subaru Outback through the showroom of Tim Dahle Mazda after the dealership refused his demand for a refund, citing their “as-is” sales policy. The incident, which occurred on Monday, has left the community rattled and sparked discussions about consumer rights and dealership policies.
The man, identified as Michael Lee Murray, reportedly purchased the vehicle earlier that morning. By the afternoon, he claimed to have discovered mechanical issues and contacted the dealership seeking a refund. When the dealership declined, citing their policy, Murray allegedly threatened to drive the car through their front door if his demand wasn’t met.
Police say Murray returned to the dealership around 4 p.m. and followed through on his threat, crashing the vehicle through the showroom entrance. Witnesses described a chaotic scene with shattered glass and displaced doors, forcing bystanders near the entrance to jump out of the way to avoid harm. The crash caused approximately $10,000 in damages, including damage to another car inside the showroom.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Murray was arrested on-site and now faces serious charges, including felony criminal mischief and misdemeanor reckless endangerment. He has since been released from custody under the condition that he comply with court proceedings and avoid further criminal activity.
This dramatic incident highlights the potential consequences of disputes over “as-is” policies and mechanical issues. Many car buyers feel trapped when faced with policies that leave little recourse after a purchase goes wrong.
